A Broke Girl’s Guide to Spring/Summer 2018 Trends
This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about spring/summer trends. To be fully transparent, I am not much of a trend girl, although you definitely couldn’t tell if you watched this video where I bang on about trends for twenty odd minutes. I definitely believe in more classic style- I love timeless cuts and prints- and let’s be honest who has the money to trend hop season to season? Not me. The awesome thing about fashion, however, is how much it cycles through. In the last few years we’ve gone back to the 80s, 70s, 90s, and now w’re in a weird but oddly satisfying mix of 60s and early 2000s. What this means for a gal on a budget such as myself, is that your mother’s closet suddenly transforms into your personal Vogue wardrobe. I’m going to be talking you guys through some of my favorite 2018 Spring/Summer trends; these are the ones I feel are the easiest to incorporate by just visiting a second hand stall or thrift shop near you, or by raiding your parents’ wardrobes.

The Protest Tee/Graphic TeeÂ
I believe this spring/summer trend is inspired by Dior taking a stand for feminism via tee shirts in their shows last year? But it’s definitely still big for the Spring/Summer. If you haven’t seen the FEMME shirts, chile where have you been? I like this because a graphic tee is so easy to find if you’re a person who grew up wearing your brothers’ hand me downs. Honestly, just talk a walk in your brother or male friend’s wardrobe and you’ll have enough of these to last a lifetime. The one I’m wearing was a hand me down from my brother and cost me nothing but a good dose of sisterly love.
Dad Sneakers
A few summers ago, I had a massive thing for sneakers. I remember I spent all the extra money I had on a pair of white Air Maxes from Kantamanto- don’t judge me. Well, the trend is back and I am absolutely obsessed. Of course, my dream ones are the Louis Vuitton S Sneakers – they are stunning- but I don’t quite have Louis schmoney. My favorite more affordable options are the FILA Disruptors and Nike Huaraches. They are super chunky and comfortable, and look great with a white tee and jeans outfit. With this trend, the wackier the color palette, the better.
Micro Sunglasses
Now nothing screams early 2000s like some rectangular lilac frames too small to shield anything but the birthmark on the bridge of your nose. I love that these are back for spring/summer. These are also really easy to find in thrift and vintage stores, or for very cheap on eBay and amazon- I’ve already ordered a pair and am getting a few more. They make all your outfits instantly Bella Hadid cool and effortless; and if you can get ones that actually do have sun protection, well then you’ve hit the jackpot my friend.
Bum Bags/Fanny Packs
This trend has been creeping up on us for a while now. I feel like these were everywhere during festival season last year but now they’ve fully moved in for spring/summer. It’s wild that every troski mate is now a fashion icon, and I’m low-key digging it. A trip to any thrift stall near you should yield some options, but as always eBay and Amazon are here with the come through too. They don’t have to be super utilitarian looking, I’ve seen some gorgeous leather ones that I adore. I have one of these also coming in the mail- don’t judge.
I hope this little trend roundup is useful in some way, or gives you the inspiration to go out and find some fresh adds to your wardrobe.
As always, sending you love and light,
Amoafoa.
