Cargo Pants are Back: Here’s how to wear them
Originally a military-inspired staple of the Alt scene girls of the early 2000s- think Avril Lavigne- cargo pants moved more into the mainstream with pop icons like Destiny’s Child in their fully cargo Survivor video, and Carrie Bradshaw, TV’s favourite New York fashion girl, bringing the piece into the vernacular of the everyday wardrobe.
Cargos have made a huge come-back, with designers like Jacquemus, Zimmerman and Isabel Marant bringing unique, wearable takes on the style, and I’m sharing a few different ways to style them, should you cop a pair.
1
Monochrome
Nothing communicates intentional and stylish quite like a monochrome moment. There’s something about the column of color that signals thoughtful styling and instantly inspires interest. Choosing a top and cargo pants that have a slight shift in tone or hue helps to create visual texture, while going for the same shades creates a sleek, polished look that can be worn day or night.
2
Lean Back
Cargo pants are a fairly casual wardrobe piece: the low slung waistline, baggy silhouette and unending pockets dial down the seriousness and make these pants ideal for everyday wear. To lean into this quality, style your cargos with baggy t-shirts, or the easy 90s tank tops that are everywhere this year. Dress up the look with some thin strap heels or go with some chunky dad sandals for a quick run to the store.
3
Elevate
If you’re planning on giving your cargos a more grown up feel, the devil is in the details. Pairs like these Dion Lee and Cult Gaia offerings are cut to mimic the look of the classic tailored trouser, and so more easily lend themselves to workwear and occasion styling. A slimmer fit over the traditional parachute shape, a neutral color and a waistband without drawstrings will give you a cargo option that suits those needs. Pair with a crisp white shirt, loafers and a trusted blazer, and you’ll be ready to take on a board meeting or cocktail hour.
