My favorite albums right now

Music is my biggest source of inspiration- everything from Beyoncé to Kwadee to Beyonce to Wizkid to yes, even Bobby Raps and Corbin. I was thinking about when to do this post when I saw a list of all the new music coming out this month. While I’m not the biggest fan of Drake, and have only ever accidentally listened to Childish Gambino, I thought I would use this time of general hype about inspiring music to slide in some of my personal favourites.

Rather obviously, the first album on my list is Solange’s A Seat At The Table.

I always loved Solange for her visual work, and felt like she undersold herself in her music. It was then incredible when she shared this work that is the perfect marriage of her talent in visual and musical composition. Also because of all the beauty of blackness it represents, I listen to this album at least once most days.

Following very closely behind is Frank Ocean’s Blonde. Now. When I tell you. I BEEN waiting on this album, I kid you not. I remember when there was that fake announcement for it last summer my friend and I stayed up doing a vigil, playing Channel Orange as we waited for the new to drop. Now that it has, I’m so happy in my spirit when I listen to it, because it feels like it’s LeBreaux’s baby that he has allowed us to hold too and that just makes me really happy.

Another album I listen to nearly every day is The Life of Pablo, Kanye West. I have it playing almost every morning as I get ready to face the day. What can I say, something about Ultralight Beam really gets me going.

Worlasi’s Nusé is a new addition to my weekly rotation. Worlasi’s voice is just, it hits you somewhere that just resonates throughout your whole self. My favorite on the album, there’s something about the dip and rise of his voice in that song that just feels so fluid and so right, I keep going back to it. All the music where it’s just his voice on the track makes me so happy.

The last album on this list if For All We Know by NAO. I believe it came out about late summer. My sun and stars suggested it to me and I didn’t love it the first time I listened to it. Over time it has really grown on me and her light voice and 90s rnb feel have influenced several of my aesthetic choices. I listen to the song Inhale Exhale all the time.

Honorable mentions go to Benjamin Clementine, Efya (although I really believe she’s selling herself so short with some of the music she’s made so far), Laura Mvula’s The Dreaming Room and Childish Gambino’s Awaken My Love- I am probably the only person who likes this album.
