how to repeat your outfits like Kate Middleton

In the spirit of staying thrifty and fashionable, today’s post is on how to repeat your outfits like Kate Middleton basically. What with the world of fashion bloggers who get sent free clothes or are allowed to pull outfits from PR companies and so always seem to have a new outfit, it can start to feel like you can never re-wear your favorite outfit without silently judging yourself. I’m here to tell you to do it shamelessly. I love repeating my outfits- I have this giant pink sweater dress I wear so much in the winter, you always know when I’m in a space because you spot a blob of candy pink and you know it’s me.

There’s nothing wrong with repeating your outfits- in fact, to me it’s similar to the benefits of thrifting. I think it’s important for creating a more sustainable fashion industry. You also learn to work with the wardrobe you have and becoming creative with it rather than always feeling like you need to buy buy buy. In this post, I’ll be sharing the things I like to do to keep my repeated outfits looking and feeling a bit more fresh each re-wear I give them.

  1. CREATE AN OUTFIT FORMULA

I think the easiest way to repeat outfits is to have a an outfit formula that is your go-to. For many people, that will be something like a white blouse and blue jeans as the base outfit. Maybe it’s a solid color midi dress, or a black top and a mini skirt for you. Essentially, having an idea of a base outfit that you know you will always feel comfortable in can be super helpful when you want to rewear the fit, because you already know what you like and what makes you feel good. This way also, when you are shopping for new clothes, you can remember to get some new basic white tees, for example, that you can just switch through when you want to repeat the look. I personally like to do that because I know my most me outfits are a white top and loose trousers combination, so I have a variety of white tops I can switch through when I want to repeat the look.

2. ACCESSORIES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

The second key I’ve learned as a serial outfit repeater, is that some statement earrings, and a cute bag/shoe collection will save you time and time again. Like I said, I really like to wear a white top with loose trousers (my Urban Outfitters red culottes are my fave) and the outfit can look so different depending on what accessories I pair with it. If I wear the look with simple white studs and a bum bag and sneakers, it feels totally different from when I wear it with gold statement earrings, lace up heels and my trusty basket bag. Accessories are the easiest way to tell different stories with the same base outfit, so just think about the vibe you’re in the mood for and pick out your accessories to match. Pinterest can be a really good source of inspiration for this too.

3. HAIR AND MAKEUP DO MATTER

My third point on repeating your outfits like a pro is just do not underestimate the power of hair and makeup y’all. Imagine this look. I have a loose fitting black midi dress I wear way too much but I try to wear differently each time. One time, I wear it with my hair curled, just foundation and lipgloss and with simple sandals to make it feel light and breezy. Second wear, I wear it with a super slick bun, full face of makeup- highlight contour all of that- red lipstick and black barely there heels. Third wear, I wear it with my hair in a high ponytail, fuchsia lipstick, super winged eyeliner and white sneakers. Do you guys see how switching out the hair and makeup (and shoes) gives the outfit a completely different feel each time? I think a lot of people tend to have a makeup look that they are comfortable with and so stick to like glue but girl life is short! Experiment with it a little bit, and with hair too. If you guys have me on Insta you’ll probably notice my hair changes all the time and I just enjoy being able to switch looks up like that- and if you wear wigs it’s that much easier. (I’m in the market for a new wig actually so if you’re a hair company and want to work with me to promote, hit me up).
