How To Style Mom Jeans Like Your Fave It Girl

About a year ago, all the fashion blogs couldn’t stop writing about Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez and how incredibly fashionable they looked in their mom jeans. While some stuck to their guns in calling the trend a fad, it has proven that it is certainly here to stay. I, myself, am a huge fan of the loose jean cut so here’s this post on how to style mom jeans like your fave fashion girl!

First of all, what is a mom jean? Well you are likely more familiar with the mom jean’s angry-at-life-and-uptight cousin, the skinny jean, so named because it hugs every single inch of your body and gives you no room to breathe and no space to put a food baby. Mom jeans are a straight cut, so unlike the skinny jean, they don’t taper as much to the leg. They are typically looser in fit- fitting in at the waist and flowing down loose and straight to the ankle. They are credited to the 90s, and if you go through your moms’ old photos you might just find a picture of them wearing some while pretending not to pose for the camera.

I, of course, love the cut. As some of you who watch my Youtube videos likely know, I am not a huge fan of denim but things like my wide leg jeans and mom jeans mimic normal trousers well enough for me to feel forgiving enough to wear them. To style them up, I would typically wear an outfit like the one pictured here. I love pairing different fits on the top and bottom so I almost always will wear a tight cropped top over a long loose bottom. That’s the same with these jeans. I think the red of the cropped top also makes for a gorge color pairing with the true denim shade of the jeans, and I couldn’t resist wearing the bum bag across body for this look- it’s the finishing touch the outfit needed. I’m wearing my white high top converse sneakers too, although you can’t see them here.

Another cool way that I would style mom jeans, would be pairing them with a button down shirt and doing the half tuck. I think something like that would create a very effortless feel, while also working to make sure you didn’t completely lose your shape in the denim. That’s one thing a lot of people don’t appreciate about these jeans is how they swallow your curves, but I think they allow you to explore other ways to communicate femininity. The third way that I would wear them would be embracing the oversized look and pairing a button down maxi dress or loose shirt over them. I think that also makes your look clean and edgy without doing too too much.

I hope you feel inspired to get some mom jeans if you don’t already own a pair- thrift stores are the perfect place to find them- or that if you do own some that you feel like you can wear them confidently.
