PENINSULA RESORT AKOSOMBO : ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Peninsula Resort in Akosombo recently fully opened up to the public, after being soft-opened for about the last year. The resort, overlooking the Volta River, is a 3 hour drive from Accra, and was my chosen spot for a day trip to celebrate my 26th birthday.

DAY TRIP TO THE PENINSULA RESORT AKOSOMBO
The resort is located on the Asuogyaman-Atimpoku road, about a 30-minute drive outside Akosombo proper. Being that it’s located in a rural area, the access road to it isn’t the best, but was certainly more manageable than I’d expected, especially after reading online reviews.
The resort allows for day guests. Visitors can pay a flat rate of 350GHS which covers their food and gives access to all of the resort’s amenities, or choose to pay for food and per acivity, each one costing 50GHS.
The amenities at the Peninsula resort include two pools, two tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, horseback riding, and a 550m canopy walkway – the longest canopy walkway in West Africa.Â
The resort offers hikes or dirtbike rides up to the canopy walkway, and our attender mentioned they might have hot-air balloons soon!
The views of Akosombo from the resort are truly stunning, and without a doubt, are worth the trip.
PENINSULA RESORT MENU
The food and drink menu, if you are a day guest, is quite limited. They offer two salads and soups, and about five main dishes with your choice of sides. We had the grilled tilapia and rosemary chicken, and they were both done really well.
THINGS TO NOTE BEFORE VISITING
While the resort is open to the public, it is still under construction. The main entrance, some of the rooms, and a few of the main buildings on the property are not finished, and it can feel a little like you are on a construction site.Â
The resort also prioritizes direct views to the river for the chalets for overnight guests, and so some of the views from the pool and balcony area are obstructed by buildings, which I found a little disappointing.
For an overnight stay, the resort has 30 open chalets, with 70 more under construction. They offer three different kinds of rooms, Standard, Twin, and Executive, going for $220, $250 and $300 a night respectively. Overnight guests also have access to their meal times buffets in addition to the menu I mentioned earlier.Â
My overall sentiments are that it’s a lovely resort, and I would recommend it for a day trip. I find that the layout of the property doesn’t seem to truly embrace the environment or prioritize the incredible location it has. The variety of activities, some tightly packed into the same stretch of land, also lends a slightly overwhelming feeling to it. In my opinion, the resort doesn’t quite seem clear on its USP, and seems to be trying to do everything at once. It means that there’s a decent range of activities to do, but it does take away from the experience of luxury that I look for in resorts.Â
