Top Foundations for Dark Skin (Drugstore)

Hi Fam!

Today I thought I would come to you with something of a series focusing on beauty.

I am beginning this series with complexion products- foundations for dark skin specifically.

It’s been a rather frustrating journey for me learning what works for my skin in terms of cosmetic products. As you might have noticed, there is a ginormous gap in the beauty industry when it comes to women of color. Too many companies ignore the WOC market, like WOC don’t make money/spend it in the industry too. I thought I would start a series highlighting brands and products that do cater to WOC, and spread the information.

For each product I mention, I will comment on shade range, wear time, and other factors relevant to your making a purchase.

Let’s begin!

  1. Black Opal True Color Pore Perfecting Liquid Foundation

This is a drugstore brand, and the foundation retails for 9 to 10 dollars depending on where you buy it. It has an amazing shade range for WOC, and this shade I bought- Ebony Brown- is actually about two shades too dark for me. Amazing for dark skin women. They also carry different undertones so if you are more golden or more red you can still probably find something that works for you.

I would recommend this foundation for people with dry skin who like their makeup to look very natural, or if you have a really really good mattifying primer. It looks like skin when you put it on which is great, but also means that if you are oily it will melt away in about two or three hours. My skin type is mainly oily so this doesn’t quite work for me. I use this shade to bronze around my face most of the time though so I can still get some use out of it. It is definitely one I recommend if you have dry skin, like your makeup to look natural, and don’t want to break the bank.

2. L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

This line of foundations from L’Oreal is their most extensive shade range option for women with dark skin. I use the shade c9, and there is one shade below this, and two more in the 9 family with different undertones. Like the Black Opal foundation, they do pay attention to undertones. This foundation also retails for about 10 dollars, and I have found that you can only find the dark skin shades on Amazon.com.

I like this foundation for those no makeup makeup days, but it isn’t incredibly long lasting my oily skin. I have heard really good review of this especially for drier skin and combination skin types. I appreciate the shade selection and really wish L’Oreal would extend the shades for some of their other lines too. All in all, this is a good one if you want something to even out your skin and stay on your face for a reasonable amount of time.

3. Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless

While I do not personally own this foundation because they don’t carry a shade dark enough for me, I have bought this for a friend and got another one onto it who loves it. It is essentially a high end foundation at a 5 dollar cost. If you have oily skin, it will stay on, and make you look so doll like and flawless. This foundation is great for light makeup days and also for heavier days because it is build able to full coverage. I really wish they would extend the shade selection, but it is a great foundation.
