What I Wear : Basic College Kid

(My face every Monday)

In Ghana I was all over American high school movies- Jon Tucker must Die, HSM, you know the ones I’m talking about. You know, with the jocks, and the cheerleaders, and the film geeks, and the regular geeks. So when I found I was coming to college here, I was a teeny bit excited to see if that actually applied, and if girls actually walked around in five inch heels- because that would blow my mind.

As you might have guessed, I was pretty disappointed- no Plastics swishing into the dining halls, no heels clicking on the staircases. Instead I found tshirts and jeans/shorts. When you have six different papers to write, I can imagine how jogging up and down the library in stilettos does not sound appealing.

At my school though most people do try to let their personal style shine through. I’ve seen mixed prints, deep distressing, tons of mesh, stripes- it’s hardly drab. My favorite dresser is Nodumo , I’m hoping she’ll allow a feature soon. Look forward to that, trust me.

This ‘what I wear’ is my version of basic college kid. Basically, the way I wish I could say I try to look when finals roll round and I’m the driver of the struggle bus.

My favourite thing in this outfit? The bag. It’s like the single most non functional backpack for any student ever. Nothing fits in it. I’m mostly an African Studies/Literature major so I pretty much always have massive books and I’ll be spotted carrying them in the crook of my arm, or my massive laptop while this really really cute (in both senses of the word) bag sits practically uselessly on my back. Thing is, I love it anyway.

It was a gift from my adviser when I got here. Funny thing is, I had this mixed print bag from Ghana that was ruining my shoulder because I filled it too heavy and so I was starting to naturally lean to one side if you understand. I had known I needed a back pack but I was too cheap to spend twenty bucks on one, and then my adviser bought me this one and I was just like, God is good.

I really love the way it looks and it makes me feel like a million bucks even when I look like crap. Do you know when that one thing you own makes you feel good about yourself no matter what? Like

I’m too hot

Hot damn

I’d love to hear what items of clothing do that for you. It’s one of the abilities of clothing that I most appreciate. If an item is right for you, just fits you perfectly or suits your personality, or just has something about it that appeals to you, it can make you feel better about a lot when struggs get real.

Also, Liane La Havas has a new song on Spotify. Don’t slack, she is amazing.

Top- H&M

Shorts (actually a romper) – H&M

Necklace- Urban Outfitters

Shoes – Accra Mall (in the back of shoprite )
